Child Marriage

In Rajasthan, over one-fourth of the girls are married before they are 18 years old and it is more than the national average. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFH), Rajasthan’s 10 districts come into the top 100 districts in India with the highest prevalence of child marriage. Rajsamand ranks the third position by contributing 26%. Child marriage is prevailing in Rajasthan since a long time has taken the shape of an evil and harmful practice. The worst thing is that such marriages are supported by their cast Panchayats and are considered normal.
Rajsamand Jan Vikas Sansthan is working since 2003 for the eradication of child marriage from the Rajsamand district. Several innovative initiatives have been taken up by our team such as collectivizing women and adolescents, their capacity building and awareness creation, legal awareness, getting affidavits from parents promising not to marry early, involving and capacity building of all involved stakeholders such as Pandits, Tent houses, and card printers, etc not to support. Promoting and extending support for girl’s education in the villages and economic empowerment to strengthen their decision making. RJVS Also helps the interested girls in the process of nullification of their child marriage and two girls have successfully nullified their marriages. RJV has been awarded for its excellent work in this area at the state level by women and Child Minister.
RJVS is conducting orientation and sensitization meetings with the caste leaders, parents, and also pandits from villages to end it forever and encouraging progress has been registered.
